Vaudeville Accordion Classics
The Complete Music of Guido Deiro

Henry Doktorski, accordion

Guido Deiro, the Italian-American accordion virtuoso-- frequently called "The Great Deiro"-- was of paramount importance in the popularization of the accordion in the early 20th century.  The first accordionist to perform on the Vaudeville stage (1910), he was also the first accordionist to make sound recordings (Edison Wax Cylinders, 1911).  For many years Deiro was a headline attraction at the great vaudeville houses throughout America and abroad, and made more than 100 recordings for the Columbia record company.  On Bridge's 2-CD set, Henry Doktorski's sparkling performances of Deiro's music quickly confirm the reason for Deiro's immense popularity.

Songs of Grechaninov

Georgine Resick, soprano
Warren Jones, piano

This disc presents thirty-three songs by the Russian born Aleksandr Grechaninov (1864-1956). The performances (sung in Russian) sample a broad range of Grechaninov's work, from children's songs (Snowflakes) to the Russian National School; and from Impressionist/Symbolist influenced works to songs based on Folk texts. Georgine Resick is a protegée of the late George London. Renowned for her Mozart and Strauss interpretations, she has sung a wide variety of leading roles with the Vienna State Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera, the Paris Opera, and the Houston Grand Opera.

Songs of Amy Beach

Patrick Mason, baritone
Joanne Polk, piano

BRIDGE 9182

Amy Beach (1873-1942) was probably the first woman composer to gain attention for writing successfully in the large forms of the nineteenth century: symphony, concerto, oratorio and chamber music. But it is in her songs and solo piano music that we glimpse a more private and intimate Beach. Beach produced more than 120 songs, only a few of which are known to the general public. This superb CD presents 22 of Beach’s finest songs, a selection which ranges from some of her earliest published efforts through her later brooding masterpieces. American baritone Patrick Mason is accompanied on this recording by leading Beach specialist, pianist Joanne Polk. Together, Mason and Polk’s penetrating interpretations make an excellent case for these songs as major English language song literature.
