Fred Lerdahl's powerfully musical voice has manifested itself in a superb series of highly detailed works for vocal and instrumental forces. Lerdahl's many honors include the Koussevitzky Composition Prize, the Composer Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Naumburg Recording Award, and the Martha Baird Rockefeller Recording Award (1982). Lerdahl was awarded an honorary doctorate from Lawrence University in 1999, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Music (2001). A noted theorist, his books are A Generative Theory of Tonal Music, co-written with linguist Ray Jackendoff (1983, second edition, 1996, MIT Press) and Tonal Pitch Space (2001, Oxford University Press). Lerdahl has taught at Harvard, UC Berkeley, the University of Michigan and Columbia University, where he is the Fritz Reiner Professor of Musical Composition.
